Stupa (Chorten in Tibetan) is an important religious monument in Tibet, representative of the seated body of Buddha. Stupas are known in many Southeast Asian countries as Chedi in some countries, particularly Sri Lanka, as Dagoba from Sanskrit dhatu, or as Tope from Hindi.
Stupas always house items that Buddhists hold sacred. Sutra scripts, Buddha statues, Tsa-Tsas, hair clippings, fingernails, relics and cremains of saints, are usually enshrined in stupas along with jewels, herbs and other objects. They are sometimes used as tombs in which mummified bodies of high lamas are buried. Each measures 4 1/2" x 2 3/8" in diameter.
